Investor push up Coinstar's stock price following rosy profit prediction

The sci-fi epic "Avatar" and romantic comedy "It's Complicated" are available at video stores, but it'll be several weeks before Redbox can offer them at its DVD-rental machines through its new distribution deals with 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios.

Coinstar, Redbox's Bellevue-based corporate parent, faces a key question: Will customers wait for Redbox's $1-a-night rental rate, or will they pay more at a video store to watch the movies right away?

Coinstar's surging stock price suggests investors like Redbox's chances. The stock hit a 52-week high Thursday as investors eagerly awaited the release of Coinstar's first-quarter financial results. Shares ended the regular trading session up $1.14, or 3 percent, at $38.21, then rose more than 20 percent after-hours to about $46.10.

The company posted a first-quarter profit of $6.4 million, or 21 cents a share, up from $2 million, or 7 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 47 percent to $350.1 million, primarily because of growth of the Redbox business.

Planning a Car Rental

With gas prices continuing to rise, driving is a much bigger expense than some years ago. When traveling, though, you may need to rely on a car rental. There are ways to save money if you plan well. Next time you're searching for a quality, affordable car rental, consider the following:

1. A car rental at the airport sometimes costs more than at a nearby agency. Compare prices beforehand; it may be worth taking a taxi a few miles to pick up the vehicle at a different rental location.

2. Centurion car rental companies usually have better deals on compact cars. If you don't need the space, why pay for it? Compact cars also get better mileage.

3. A car rental usually costs more if you pick up the vehicle at one location and drop it off at another. However, think about the price of returning to the original locale. Is it cheaper to pay for the gas or for the drop-off? This might sway your decision a little.

4. Car rental agencies offer prepaid fill-ups on return of the vehicle. Compare their costs with the gas pump prices and decide beforehand which is a better deal.

5. A weekly car rental usually costs less than paying for five or six days alone. If you're staying just under a week, it is better to pay this rate and return the car early.

6. Avoid buying insurance from the car rental company if possible. Some credit cards cover car rental insurance; in the event of collision or theft you'll be taken care of. Check your credit card agreement ahead of time.

7. Save the extra driver cost by choosing a designated driver. Some car rental agencies charge more to add a driver.

Keeping these factors in mind before your Roodepoort car rental , you can save a substantial amount of money. Shop wisely, and know before you go!
