Dick Blake: 50 years and counting at Thunder Road

Thunder Road's 50th anniversary season has come and gone, but another golden anniversary will be the spotlight when the track's 51st year starts up with Sunday's Merchants Bank 150.

Dick Blake, 79 years young and still the captain of the Blake & Loso wrecker crew, will begin his 50th year retrieving race cars that are too entangled or smashed up to limp into the pits on their own.

"I still look forward to it every week," Blake said. "I've missed a night here or there, but we guarantee the wrecker will be there every night. Fred Weston, Chummy Laperle and my son Randy are the rest of the crew. In years past, Morris Martin, Henry Laperle and Maurice Laperle put in a lot of time with me."

Although Blake is approaching 80, none of his auto racing memories have faded.

"I remind Ken Squier every once in awhile that I've been to more races at Thunder Road than he has," Blake said with a grin. "In the early 60s, Merlin Bean and I built a coupe. We ran it as
