Vallejo man sentenced to prison for rental car scam
REDWOOD CITY -- A Vallejo man convicted of possessing a stolen rental car that he later sold was sentenced to four months in jail Friday.San Mateo County Superior Court Judge James Ellis also ordered Fred White, 30, to complete three years of probation, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. A jury convicted White on March 10 of possessing the stolen vehicle after a three-day trial.
Prosecutors say someone rented a 2006 Honda Accord from Dollar Rent-A-Car at San Francisco International Airport in November 2007 and never returned it. They were never able to prove who rented the car, Wagstaffe said.
Four months later, White showed up at the Department of Motor Vehicles and registered the Honda in his name. He presented a bill of sale for $100. White also asked for and got new license plates.
Wagstaffe said it's not clear how the man was able to register the vehicle even though it had been reported stolen.
