Don't even think about idling your car in the parking lot for more than half a minute. Heck, don't drive at all - ride your bicycle. Employees who do so get a $20 bonus each month.

Premier, which paints products as diverse as its environmental practices, is the first in the county to pass a new conservation audit program offered by the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. But many of the changes it has made are neither complex nor costly.

"I'm doing it for my kids, so they can have a better world," said Mitch Carrasco, Premier's facility organization manager and, unofficially, the green police chief - complete with a green whistle around his neck.

Premier, based in a south Stockton warehouse for 15 years, already had installed skylights that save 80 percent on lighting costs, and it already had a "cool roof" to deflect summer's stinging heat.

"We thought we had everything covered. But it's the small stuff we had to start," said Wendy Foulks, the company's safety and environmental guru.
